Review by @giotap_boardgames
War Chest is an abstract game for 2 or 4 players, with bag-building mechanics and strategy. From the mind of Trevor Benjamin and David Thompson, brought to Italy by Ghenos games, War Chest is a simple but deep game, with excellent replayability and longevity and materials of excellent quality.
But let’s jump right into the heart of the battle!
Regulation
War Chest presents itself as a title very similar to chess, but with an extra level of strategy and planning. In addition to our units on the plank we will have to manage our “bag” or bag, recruiting the various troops from the reserve.
Set Up for 2 players
The set up is really fast and simple. For the first game I recommend the units of the regulation, for subsequent matches, for greater planning, I recommend drafting, thus allowing you to create balanced teams.
Rules in Brief
Each round of War Chest consists of two stages:
Fishing Tokens
Using Tokens
In the first phase each player will fish from the bag 3 Random tokens, they can be used in various ways in the second phase.
Using Tokens
This phase is the real focus of the game, in which each player, starting from the first, will use the newly fished Tokens to carry out the various Actions at his disposal. But let’s see them in more detail.
There are 3 types of action in War Chest
Placement Action
Action discarding a Token face down
Action discarding a Token face up
Placement Actions are divided into Deploy and Strengthen. The deployment allows you to place a token caught in a controlled space. There can only be one unit per type on the board. Reinforcing, on the other hand, allows you to put the Token on a unit already present on the map, to make it more resistant during the clash.
